No lump sum ready, but a fixed amount can leave your salary or business income every month - that is exactly who the Post Office RD is built for.

Deposit a fixed amount monthly for 5 years, and the government pays 6.7% interest with quarterly compounding on it. Use the calculator above for your exact maturity figure, then read the rate, rules and the two traps below.

What Is a Post Office RD?

It is the National Savings Recurring Deposit, a Government of India scheme run by India Post. You deposit one fixed amount every month - 60 deposits in total - and receive the full amount with interest when 5 years complete.

The tenure is fixed: every Post Office RD runs for exactly 5 years. Unlike bank RDs, you cannot choose 1, 3 or 7 years here. After maturity, you may extend it for 5 more years, with or without fresh deposits.

If instead you already hold a lump sum, depositing monthly makes no sense - compare the one-time route on our Post Office FD Calculator.

How to Use This Post Office RD Calculator

Step 1: Pick a monthly amount from the chips or type your own. The deposit must be in multiples of ₹10.

Step 2: The rate is set to the current 6.7%. You can change it to test what a future rate would give.

Step 3: Read the maturity value, your total deposit over 60 months and the interest earned in the pink box.

Post Office RD Interest Rate 2026

The Post Office RD interest rate is 6.7% per year for the October-December 2026 quarter, unchanged for several quarters. Interest is compounded quarterly, which is why the maturity value is higher than a simple 6.7% calculation suggests.

Two things to know about this rate. First, the government reviews it every 3 months, but your account keeps the rate from the day you opened it for the full 5 years. Second, there is no extra rate for senior citizens in this scheme - 6.7% is the same at every age.

Quarterly compounding does real work here: on ₹5,000 a month it adds ₹56,829 of interest over 5 years. To see how compounding changes results at other rates, try our Interest Calculator.

Post Office RD Rules You Should Know

  • Monthly deposit: minimum ₹100, in multiples of ₹10, and no maximum limit
  • Deposit date matters: if your account opened on or before the 15th of a month, deposit by the 15th every month; if it opened after the 15th, deposit by the last working day of the month
  • Accounts: single and joint accounts allowed; a guardian can open one for a minor; NRIs cannot open this account
  • Extension: after 5 years you can continue the account for 5 more years at the same opening rate, with monthly deposits or by simply leaving the maturity amount in
  • Nomination: add a nominee at opening itself

What If You Miss a Monthly Deposit?

A missed month is called a default. The charge is small but real: ₹1 per ₹100 of your monthly deposit, for every month of default. On a ₹5,000 deposit, one missed month costs ₹50.

You are allowed up to 4 defaults - the maturity simply extends by the missed months. Beyond 4 defaults, the account is discontinued. It can be revived only within 2 months of the fourth default, by paying all missed deposits and fees together. If it is not revived, you eventually get back only what you actually deposited, with interest on that part.

One useful facility against tight months: you can deposit in advance. Paying 6 or more months in advance earns a rebate of ₹10 per ₹100 of monthly deposit, and 12 months in advance earns ₹40 per ₹100.

Loan Against Your Post Office RD

After 12 deposits have been made and the account has run for 1 year, you can take a loan of up to 50% of the balance in your RD account. The loan interest is the RD rate plus 2%, charged as simple interest.

This is worth knowing before an emergency pushes you to close the account - a loan keeps the RD running and earning, while closing early is heavily punished, as the next section shows.

Closing a Post Office RD Before 5 Years

This is the harshest rule of the scheme, and the one most people learn too late: a Post Office RD cannot be closed before 3 years at all, and if you close it any time after 3 years but before the full 5, you do not get the RD rate. The entire period is paid at the Post Office savings account rate of just 4% - even if you close one day before maturity.

So treat this as a strict 5-year commitment. Deposit only an amount you can sustain every single month for 60 months.

Tax on Post Office RD Interest

  • Interest is fully taxable at your income tax slab - there is no tax-free status here
  • No Section 80C deduction on the deposits, unlike the 5-year Post Office FD
  • TDS is deducted when your interest in a financial year crosses ₹50,000 (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens); the interest must be shown in your ITR in any case
